Homeschooling is becoming more popular, especially since the recent pandemic disrupted our schools. So if you’re going to homeschool your children, it is important to teach them a well-rounded curriculum. And you don’t have to do this alone, as you should use some excellent homeschool resources.
Common Teaching Methods
Before starting, you should familiarize yourself with the common teaching methods and the various teaching strategies. Once you become comfortable with a teaching method, you will have the freedom to model it to best fit your children. The three most popular homeschool teaching methods are:
- Montessori encourages students to learn at their own pace. Children should have the freedom to choose what they want to learn and how they want to learn which can include neon lights and pastel colors. It emphasizes hands-on learning over technology.
- Charlotte Mason encourages children to develop new ideas and build habits that will stay with them forever. It emphasizes establishing short lessons for their age, spelling, grammar, art, music, nature studies and the ability to think clearly.
- Waldorf is divided into three distinct stages based on developmental suitability. First, music plays a significant part, and technology is a minor part until high school.
Science
Science is not an easy subject to teach. Most children are naturally curious and take to learning science easily, as long as it’s fun. An effective way to teach science to elementary-age children is using hands-on projects. Adobe Education Exchange is an excellent resource for teaching simple 3rd grade science projects. With this resource, parents and students can create and produce their science projects as they learn science.
Speed Reading
Learning to speed read will help children through school and the rest of their life. A free app called Spreeder is a resource that will help children get rid of bad reading habits and teach them to read quickly and understand what they are reading. With Spreeder, you can put any text you like into the free app, like a book, article or something you’ve written.
Language Lessons
Becoming multilingual is a great asset for children to have. Teaching a foreign language is not easy for a homeschool teacher unless they are fluent in the language and can watch series to upkeep with it. DuoLingo is a free online resource that makes learning a new language fun. Children can practice while away from the class as they also have an app for phones and tablets.
Math
Prodigy Math Game offers free math courses, along with an optional premium membership for $4.99 per month. Their courses make learning math fun, and the adaptive algorithm will adjust the math lessons to your child’s progress and grade level. Numerous other online math websites, such as Brighterly, are dedicated to teaching math to children. Parents and teachers get tools to track their student’s progress and help to support their learning.
Khan Academy
They offer free lessons for all grade levels. The lessons are in practice exercises, instructional videos and test preparation. Some of the subjects they cover include computer programming, arts and humanities and life skills. In addition, Khan Academy will help students build a solid foundational base in each subject.
These resources will help everyone who teaches their children to get started with homeschooling. They provide a basis for courses that every child wants to learn.
