1. Clear the Area

3. Prepare the Soil

You should also spread a soil amendment over the soil. This is sometimes referred to as a soil conditioner. If you have a lot of compost at your home then you can use this too.

Use your tiller to mix the soil conditioner and starter fertilizer into the dirt. Rake your soil to start to level it out. Remove any debris and rocks.

To make sure that your surface water gets proper drainage you need to make sure that any site grading lets water flow away from your home.

Lastly, use a lawn roller to finish leveling the soil. You then should lightly wet the soil.

4. Apply the Seed

Look at your bag of grass seed and follow the recommended seeding rate. Apply the seed with a seed spreader.

Spread a quarter of the seed over your whole lawn. Repeat this several times, using the same amount of seed. You also want to distribute a load of seed and push the spreader in a new direction every four times.

Rake your soil a little bit to cover the seed with a thin layer of dirt.

You can then empty the water from the roller drum and roll the surface of the lawn.
