Do you think that you do not have enough outlets in your home? You may need more outlets. While it is best to hire an electrician to help you install new outlets, you can convert a light switch into an electrical outlet.
Let’s take a look at the step by step guide on how you can convert your light switch into an outlet:
Step 1 – Get a Receptacle
The first thing you need to do is get an outlet (Receptacle). You will also need the cover, and you can easily find the two at any hardware store. The shape of the receptacle depends on the junction box. If the junction box is octagonal, you will need a round receptacle.
Step 2 – Put Your Tools Together
The next thing you need to do is put all your tools together. It is a good idea to gather tools first, so you don’t have to look for one at the last moment. You may need tools such as a screwdriver, non-contact voltage sensor, Pliers (needle-nose), and wire strippers. Now that you have your tools ready, we can begin the process.
Step 3 – Cut Off the Main Power
To be safe and prevent electrocuting yourself, you must first turn off the main power, or you can turn off the electrical power of the light switch from the electrical panel.
Step 4 – Take out the Light Fixture
Remove the light fixture first, and to do that, you will need first to remove the light cover. Then you can unscrew the mounting screws and remove the fixture from the junction box. Disconnect all the electrical wiring and remove all the screws.
Step 5 – Strip the Lights Switch’s Electrical Wiring
Strip the ends of the wires that are extending from the junction box. The wires may be stripped already. First, you need to cut the stripped ends to strip the wires later so that there is about half or one inch of exposed copper unless you want to sit around aesthetic lights.
Step 6 – Insert Screw Loops & Connect Wires
The next step is to identify your electrical wiring. Without knowing what each wire does, you may put yourself in harm’s way. Add all the screw loops to the wires. To fix them, you will also need your pliers to bend them in place and make sure the screw loops are attached to the end of your wires.
Once you are done with the screw loops, you can connect them to the receptacle. Connect the screw loop of your red or black wire to the top brass screw and then tighten it. The next thing you need to do is to fix the screw loop of your white wire on the top silver screw of the receptacle and the green wire with the green screw.
Step 7 – Fix the Receptacle
Once you connect all the wires, you can use the mounting screws to mount your receptacle from both sides of the box. Mount the receptacle on the junction box. As soon as you are done mounting the receptacle, you need to make sure it is working. To test the receptacle, you need to switch the main power on and see if the outlet is working.
This is before you cover the outlet with the cover so that you can fix if there are any problems with the fixture.
Step 8 – Cover the Outlet
Now that the outlet is working fine, you can install the cover. The outlet cover will depend on your junction box. You must also make sure that the ceiling hole is not bigger than the outlet cover. If the hole is bigger, you will have to patch it up so that the opening for your receptacle fits perfectly.
Please do this before installing the outlet. This way, you will not have to patch it up at the very end so that you can relax and enjoy content from kickass torrent.
