The easiest way to understand an HVAC system’s function is to compare it to the respiratory system. Just as the latter moves fresh air into the body and removes waste gases, your HVAC unit helps maintain good indoor air quality so everyone in your home can breathe easily.
Now, the respiratory system has parts that help it with roles crucial to breathing and other functions. For example, the lungs protect the body by coughing, sneezing, filtering, and trapping harmful substances.
The same goes for your home HVAC system. You may think of an aircon filter, for instance, doing what your lungs do. The only difference is the lungs aren’t replaced as frequently as aircon filters.
That said, here’s why you need to replace your HVAC filters often.
The Average Lifespan of Air Filters
Air filter replacement is usually every three months, but that’s for the most common types of HVAC filters. If you have thicker filters with more pleats and higher filtration strength, you could get away with not replacing them every 90 days.
Of course, if you use your aircon often, live in an area with a dry, dusty climate, and have pets, you may have to replace your aircon filter every two months. For homes with individuals who have respiratory issues, HVAC experts recommend replacing your filters every 45 days to ensure optimal air quality.
Do note that for vacation homes, the three-month rule may not apply. If you have one and use it once or twice a year, you can replace your air filters every six months.
Staying On Top of Aircon Maintenance
Not changing your aircon filters as recommended will affect the air quality in your home. Think about it. Your filters trap grime and germs so you can breathe healthy air.
If you keep using old air filters that can no longer capture air particulates, your HVAC system will circulate dirty air. Prolonged exposure to unfiltered air can lead to health problems, including asthma, allergies, and other respiratory issues.
Another reason to change filters is for preventive maintenance. Dirty air filters make your HVAC unit work harder, increasing energy bills. Also, the harder your HVAC system works, the higher the chance it will malfunction.
A new HVAC system is a costly investment. It’s better to spend time and money on maintaining your old one by keeping up with tasks like regular air filter replacement and aircon servicing when needed.
Do You Need to Replace Your Aircon Filter?
If you can’t remember the last time you changed your aircon filter, you should get new ones asap. Don’t wait for your HVAC system to malfunction or for someone in your aesthetic home to get sick.
Don’t forget that not replacing your HVAC filters can increase your energy bills and make your unit work harder. If you stay on top of aircon cleaning and maintenance, you won’t have to worry about breathing in poor-quality air and replacing your HVAC system soon.
