After you have some work done on your home, who will clean up the mess? Sure, you may have a new addition to the house or a renovated room, but there will still be debris, construction components, and dust to clean up. Who is going to do all of that work?
You want to be careful how you handle the cleanup, as a poor cleaning can simply spread dust around the home and make for a bigger mess. We have some helpful suggestions you can use to make this process go more smoothly, though.
Close Off the Area
The first thing you should do is close the area to anyone who might pass through there. You don’t want people who live in your home or visitors to walk through the construction area until it is completely cleaned. Keep in mind that people will be excited to see the progress of the construction and will want to see how the finished product looks. However, they could easily track dust throughout the house from the construction area or get small pieces of debris stuck in their feet or shoes.
So, do what you need to do to close off this area until it has been completely cleaned. You can close the entry door to the area and lock it, you can put up caution tape on the entryway, or post a sign of no entry for this area. Whatever you do, make sure that no one is coming in there and disturbing the mess and spreading it throughout the rest of the house.
Talk to the Contractors
In many cases, the construction crew who worked on the project will be able to do the cleanup as well. They should be able to get rid of the larger debris quite easily and should have a plan for doing so. This is your best method for getting the area cleaned quickly, since they will already be in the work site and will know what needs to be taken care of.
However, not all construction companies offer this service. Some of them will require you to find a separate cleaning solution. Others will only do perfunctory cleaning, just tidying up the bare minimum to say that they did some work. If this happens to you, you may not have any other recourse but to do the cleaning yourself or to find someone else who can do it. You may not be able to count on the construction company to handle the clean up, and the little bit of cleaning that they do may not be to your liking.
Deal with Large Debris
The next step is to deal with the largest bits of debris. These may be panels, tiles, fixtures, and other large items that need to be moved out of the construction space. This would include anything that doesn’t belong there and anything you want to trash that can’t easily be swept up or put into a trash bag.
That is what you would classify as large debris, and you may need a separate cleaning solution for these items compared to the smaller components. If you try to remove the larger items yourself, you may run into some trouble. These pieces may be too heavy for you, there may be too many of them, or you could hurt yourself because of the sharp edges or the large size of these items.
You can get a debris removal company to handle this for you or even a general cleaning service. Some cleaning companies will offer post construction cleanup and all related services, which could include after builders washup and more. If you plan to hire someone to do the general cleanup of the construction area, you should at least ask them if they do debris removal. It makes sense to have both of these tasks done at the same time by the same company.
The large debris will need to be cleared out of the way before the rest of the cleaning can happen. Otherwise, the debris will hinder the cleaning and make it take longer. It will also prevent you from ensuring a proper and complete cleaning.
Handle the Dust
When you have had some work done in your home like a remodel or an addition being built, then you will probably have a lot of dust to clean up afterwards. The dust can be the biggest part of the cleanup to handle, because of how much there is. You also have to be very careful with it, as you don’t want it to spread throughout the house.
It’s a good idea to focus on the dust immediately after cleaning up the large items of debris. The dust is what will most easily escape from the construction area and affect the rest of the house, so you want to get rid of it quickly. You can sweep it up with a broom and dustpan or vacuum it up. Make sure that you’re wearing protective gear to block dust particles from getting into your nose and mouth. You should also keep the area well ventilated to minimize allergy symptoms.
Finish the Cleanup
Finally, you want to complete the rest of the cleaning, which may include washing down the construction area, wiping down counters, scrubbing tiles, and more. Essentially, you’ll need to do a deep cleaning of the entire area. That ensures that all the dust and dirt is removed, all the small pieces of debris are taken away, and the area looks spotless.
This may be something that you want to hire cleaners for or try to do yourself. Whatever you do, make sure the job is done properly and that the end result is beautiful so that you can appreciate your newly constructed area.
We hope that these tips prove helpful to you and allow you to have a cleaner and more beautiful space when you are finished. Handling the post construction cleanup can be tough, but it helps if you know the steps to go through.
